The Theme Finder
Turn “My Story” Into a Theme Readers Are Already Searching For
8 Prompts + 10 Before/After Examples + Subtitle Formula + Podcast Pitch
Why This Matters (90 Seconds)
Memoir readers don’t search for you. They search for their problem at 2 AM: grief, caregiving, leaving faith, late-diagnosis, addiction recovery. If your subtitle doesn’t name that searchable problem, your book is invisible — even if it’s beautifully written.
Test: If you can’t state your theme in 8 words, you’re not ready to market. This worksheet gets you there in ~20 minutes.
The 8 Prompt Sequence
Fill in order. Don’t skip #1-2 — they’re the foundation.
1. What happened? (One factual sentence — no emotion yet)
Example: “I cared for my mother with early-onset dementia from ages 29-33 while raising a toddler.”
2. Who will Google this at 2 AM? (Your reader avatar)
Example: “A millennial daughter newly told ‘Mom has dementia’ and told to ‘get affairs in order.'”
3. What is the question your book answers? (Not your answer — their question)
Example: “How do you parent your parent while parenting your child?”
4. What does culture get wrong about this? (Your angle)
Example: “Everyone thinks memory loss is the hardest part — actually it’s becoming your mother’s mother.”
5. Your 8-word theme statement
Example: “Becoming your mother’s mother before becoming one yourself.” (8 words)
6. Subtitle Formula (This is your Amazon SEO)
Use: A Memoir of [specific searchable situation]
Working subtitle: A Memoir of Caring for a Parent with Early-Onset Dementia
7. Full Title Test
Short literary title (2-5 words) + heavy-lifting subtitle.
Example: When We Were Sisters: A Memoir of Late-Diagnosis Autism
8. Podcast Pitch — One Paragraph (Copy-Paste)
Hosts don’t care you wrote a book. They care you can serve their listener’s question.
